Sass – LibSass is now Deprecated

Keeping LibSass up-to-date with the latest developments in the Sass Language has been a challenge in the past years. There has been much discussion among the Sass core team and in the end, they have concluded it is time to declare LibSass and all of the packages built on top of it, deprecated. There has been excellent work coming from Michael Mifsud and Marcel Greter, though they couldn’t keep up with the pace of development in both CSS and Sass.

So what does this mean?

  • It is no longer recommend for new Sass projects. You can Use Dart Sass instead.
  • It is no longer planned to add new features to LibSass.
  • LibSass and Node Sass will, however, continue to be maintained indefinitely without any guarantee.

So what does this mean?

Even though LibSass has been signaled as Deprecated. It’s not going to deprecated per se, it will still get some support by some if its contributors. However, it is safe to assume that, while you can still use it, once you have a choice, use an alternative

How do I migrate?

As a Node Sass user, migrating to Dart Sass is as simple as replacing node-sass in the package.json file with sass.

For the SassC command-line interface, switch to Dart Sass’s CLI.
